Alessandro Balducci has been a full professor of planning at the Politecnico di Milano, where he is a member of the PhD Program in Urban Planning, Design and Policy. He has been Deputy-mayor for Urban Planning and Agriculture of the City of Milan in 2015-2016, Vice-Rector of Politecnico di Milano from 2010 to 2015, Head of the Department of Architecture and Planning (2001-2008), President of AESOP, the Association of the European Schools of Planning (2001-2004), Chair of the Italian Society of Urbanists (SIU), (2010-2014) and he has been among the founding members of the European Urban Research Association (EURA).

He has been teaching at the Faculty of Architecture of Pescara (1992-1995), has been visiting scholar at U.C. Berkeley, USA, and visiting professor at the University of Reims, France; Tongji University, China; Aalto University in Helsinki; Finland, MIT Cambridge, USA; Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio, Switzerland, and is Qiushi Chair Professor at the Zhejiang University of Hangzhou, China.

He is the author and editor of books, articles, and essays in Italian and English. His most recent books include La città invisibile. Quello che non vediamo sta cambiando le metropoli (2023); Cities learning from a pandemic. Towards preparedness (with Armondi, Bovo,and Galimberti (2023); Risk and Resilience. Socio-Spatial and Environmental Challenges (with Chiffi and Curci) (2020).
